If You Think You Know How To Say Mount Everest, You're Sorely Mistaken

by N/A, 10 years ago | 1 min read

The world's tallest mountain standing at 29,000 feet above sea level, Mount Everest was named after a geographer by the name of Colonel Sir George Everest in 1865. Everybody knows this behemoth of natural wonder, but do they actually know how to pronounce the prolific mountain's name? You may think you do, but you don't.

This is the man Colonel Sir George Everest, himself. The now famous mountain was named after him for his numerous contributions to the Great Trigonometric Survey, by the Royal Geographical Society.

The pronunciation of his name has been changed slightly by society over time, and it seems like something that could easily have been done. Basically, the emphasis has been put on the wrong syllable.

The name should actually be pronounced Eve-rest, with the emphasis coming before the "r" not after as it's been commonly said.

Essentially, it's pronounced Eve-rest as in the woman's name, "Eve" then like to nap, "rest." Get it? Eve-rest.

So when someone asks you what the name of the world's tallest mountain is, what are you going to say? Mount Everest, but you'll say it right this time.

Let's make the joint effort as a people to pay homage to the actual man behind the colossal mountain for the first time in years.
