Here's The Reason 160 Endangered Animals Were Projected Onto The Empire State Building

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

Historically, our planet as a whole has been pretty remiss to the rapid incline in extinct and endangered species of animals, in large part because the grievous lack of media attention around it. But just recently, Discovery Channel did something no one could ignore.

For three hours this past Saturday, August 1st, the nature-focused network had images of 160 endangered animals projected onto the Empire State Building's facade, for an initiative they've fittingly naming, "Projecting Change."

Among the 160 different endangered animals was Cecil the lion.

As many know, Cecil was the 13-year-old male Southwest African lion who lived in Hwange National Park in Matabeleland, Zimbabwe, who was heinously shot and killed on July 1st, 2015 by Walter Palmer, an American dentist and "recreational big-game hunter." His death prompted a pervasive outrage among animal conservationists.

Different animals were displayed at the same time on each of the Empire State Building's four sides.
And New Yorkers were captivated by the unexpected and sobering display.
Discovery Channel organized the event to promote its new documentary "Racing Extinction," an in depth look at the litany of recently endangered animals and the horrifyingly rapid spike in the extinction of species.
The special airs this December.
While it only lasted three short hours, "Projecting Change" has generated an immense amount of buzz and awareness around animal preservation.

The New York Times shared the individual backstories to some of the animals displayed.

If we don't do something collectively as a planet soon to improve hunting laws and protect these dwindling animal populations...
Our planet will forever be without some of its most beautiful creatures. And that's a tragedy none of us can ever reverse.
Check out some of the "Projecting Change" images that New Yorkers saw:
