The statues carved from volcanic rock between 100 AD to 1800 by ancient Polynesians, built to represent tribal figures, were revealed to have much more than meets the eye in a 2012 archaeology dig.
The dig revealed that the famous Easter Heads actually have bodies hidden below the Earth's surface.
Archaeologists have known about the bodies since 1914, after studying these statues for a century. They were hidden because of erosions.
The scientists noticed that the beautifully decorated statues had more to be discovered when they began digging.
The Heads are known to represent tribal figures and ancestors, but the bodies may have also been displayed originally in all their glory.
These monoliths are said to represent the canoes of the Polynesians, according to academic insight.
The Rapa Nui people of the island have helped in the excavations to reveal everything the Easter Island Heads have to offer.
There's 887 of these monstrous statues, some up to 10 meters tall and weighing 80 tons.
