New York-based New Zealand artist Owen Dippie is a fan of both classical art and modern pop culture, but never before has a work of his embodied his love for both quite so much.
On a wall running along a railroad track in Brooklyn, Dippie rendered murals of the iconic Renaissance artists, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello. As many know, these were also the names given to the famous the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - hence why Dippie cleverly painted the artists with their corresponding TMNT masks.
As an avid fan of both Renaissance art and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dippie says that the piece was "a matter of respect."
“I am a child of popular culture and am inspired by my heroes...â€
“By involving them in my art I pay my utmost respect to them in the best way I know how.â€
And while it may not be the first time this concept has been attempted, it's definitely one of the most phenomenal renditions out there.
