by N/A, 10 years ago | 1 min read

Favored female body types didn't always look the way they do today.

body History Women's Issues Non-Premium

2000s: Athletics Abounding

Strong, athletic bodies defined beauty in the 2000s.

1940s: Strong bodies take stage

Women in the 40s actually worked to gain weight and were more concerned with being healthy than being skinny.

1910s: Gibson Girl

The Gibson Girls were named after the illustrator Charles Gibson. Their body types favored slim, corseted waists, sloped back and wide hips.

1920s: Flappers

Loose, drop-waist dresses and flat chests were all the rage in the 20s. There was also less focus on the hips.

1950s: Curves are back

Curvy bombshells like Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe were celebrated the world over. Women began to emulate their soft, feminine features.

1930s: Curves on Curves

Screen stars Mae West and Jean Harlow set the standard for celebrated curves in the 1930s.

1960s: Waif wonderland

Ultra skinny models like Twiggy made super slim waif-y figures super popular in the 60s.

2010s: Bodacious Booty

The 2010s have been the decade of the booty. Curves on curves and flat stomachs are the gold standard of this decade.

1970s: Lean is lovely

Long, lean athletic figures like Farrah Fawcett's defined beauty in the 70s.

1980s: Fit and fabulous

A huge fitness craze hit popular media in the 80s, so fit and strong bodies became the norm for women.

1990s: The return of the waif

Waif and "heroin-chic" models were everywhere in the 1990s, so a return to slim figures started.
