by N/A, 10 years ago | 8 min read

They can't make you look as fabulous as you envisioned if you don't know how to properly communicate what you're thinking. That's all–so, just help them out a little, and you'll both be happy.

1. Understand what exactly your ~change threshold~ is before overcommitting yourself.

If deep down you know you don't want a massive change, just understand that you don't have to do that. Say what you honestly want.

2. Again, you don't need a massive makeover to actually make a change.

Lorean Cairns, co-owner and creative director of Fox & Jane Salon, NY, says there's a lot of options that are subtle, but can yield big results. Change your part, blow it out or even slight change of color can make a difference.

3. Have a realistic expectations when it comes to ~inspiration~ photos.

Cairns said, “WE LOVE PHOTOS. In hair, a picture really is worth a thousand words, if the client meets their end of the bargain,” so use this to your advantage to get the most out of your hairstylist appointment.

4. As well as when it comes to hair color.

When a stylist says that your color transformation is a bit unrealistic, you really just need to believe them.

5. Going in for professional coloring after using the box hair dye can lead to big issues.

“If you use box dye, you must come in knowing that no result can be guaranteed during your visit. Box or home hair color is formulated to work on any hair type, not customized, as a professional would do it. Basically, it is STRONG stuff,” says Cairns. Just know your different options and what each will leave you with.

6. So let your stylist know if you have, so they can properly approach the coloring process.
7. Have a budget before setting your appointment.

Talk to a receptionist about pricing so that you know exactly what you can afford.

8. Once the salon sets a price–respect it. If you can't afford it, simply modify what you want done at this appointment.
9. Arriving late to your appointment ruins the rest of the stylist's day.

Cairns says it should be a, "fun, not stressful experience." Make sure you get the most of the time you've give for the entirety of this experience.

10. Make enough time in your day to get everything you want done.

If you've only reserved an hour of your day for a large service, chances are your stylist can't get it all done.

11. Overall, you should have complete trust in your stylist.

“If you’ve done your homework, there should be no reason to question your stylist’s abilities. Checking your stylist’s credentials should happen before they have scissors in your hair,” says Cairns. Check out Yelp reviews, before committing to a new stylist.

12. Mostly, just let them do what they are trained to do.

Not all stylists will work the same–relax and trust the process.

13. They understand there's more to do than just cutting "dead parts."

Get on the same page as your stylist from the beginning, because even if you only want a trim, cutting off a few inches may be what is healthiest for your hair.

14. Damaged hair is unhealthy–you're better off without it to be honest.

It has a hard time holding texture and color. Plus there is no bounce!

15. If your stylist asks you to keep your head turned a certain way, just understand it's for a good reason.

Cairns says getting guests to sit still is a must, because, hair cutting has a lot to do with geometry!”

16. Realize that touching your hair during the appointment will cause more harm than do any good.

Stylist put your hair a certain way to know that they've made the correct cut. Wait for the okay to start running your fingers through it.

17. In the end–help your hairstylist help you.
