If you ride a bike a lot - whether competitively or for transportation - you know you have a lot more to be watchful of at night than during the day. And if you don't spot them in advance, things like potholes, weather cracks and other road imperfections can all lead to nasty, injurious spills.
In an effort to help bicyclists avoid these accidents, a group of Chinese researchers from Sichuan University developed a brilliant innovation called, "The Lumigrid."
The Lumigrid emits an LED grid of light onto the ground in front of the cyclist and deforms in correspondence with the objects it touches.
When the light touches an area that is dissimilar from the riding surface, the Lumigrid displays it's contours visually so they can be avoided.
The device has three modes. The default mode sends out an image of 5.5 x 7.1 inch squares, the high speed mode sends out a 5.5 x 10.2 inch squares and the team mode expands to 11.8 x 7.9 inch squares.
Unfortunately, the Lumigrid is still just a concept and hasn't fully been developed yet. But the product is expected to be complete by sometime this year.
