Aokigahara Forest is said to be one of the most haunted in the world. This Japanese landmark has an ominous history that you won't soon forget.Â
Aokigahara Forest is also called Japan's Suicide Forest. Between 50 and 100 people commit suicide there every year.
Signs are posted at the entrance of the forest in an attempt to stop suicidal people. This one reads "Your life is a precious gift from your parents. Please think about your parents, siblings and children. Don't keep it to yourself. Talk about your troubles." It also includes contact information for the Suicide Prevention Association.
After the publication of the book Kuroi Jukai, where a character commits suicide in Aokigahara, people began to take their own lives in the forest.
Bodies are only recovered by officials once a year because the forest's location at the base of Mt. Fuji makes it very dense.
