Check Out What Marine Biologists Found When They Dove Into the World's Deepest Trench

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

Recently, the marine biology exploration and research group, America’s Ocean Exploration Team, went on an expedition on the seafloor of the Puerto Rico Trench - the deepest trench in the Atlantic Ocean, reaching depths of up to 8,800 meters and extending for over 800 km long.

During their exploration, the group discovered a host of alien-like, never-before-seen fish, so unique that most couldn't be categorized into an existing species.

Some creatures were so new and unrecognizable, they couldn't even give them names.

Not to mention, a few of them were insanely adorable.

Others looked like species we know, but turned out to be far different from them.

During their extensive dives, the AOET team discovered an absolutely overwhelming amount of new creatures.

In all, 100 species of fish, 50 species of deep-water corals, and hundreds of other invertebrates were recorded over 12 dives. And that's not including the ones they weren't able to classify.

Not only was the expedition remarkably eye-opening and productive...
But it also served as a potent reminder for how much more deep sea marine exploration biologists should be doing, and just how much is in the ocean that we have yet to discover.

“It’s pretty amazing that we haven’t been there yet, exploring really deep depths,” Andrea Quattrini, the co-lead for the expedition, told Quartz. "[Roughly] 95 percent of the ocean remains unexplored."
