Check Out What Marine Biologists Found When They Dove Into the World's Deepest Trench
Recently, the marine biology exploration and research group, America’s Ocean Exploration Team, went on an expedition on the seafloor of the Puerto Rico Trench - the deepest trench in the Atlantic Ocean, reaching depths of up to 8,800 meters and extending for over 800 km long.
During their exploration, the group discovered a host of alien-like, never-before-seen fish, so unique that most couldn't be categorized into an existing species.
Not to mention, a few of them were insanely adorable.
In all, 100 species of fish, 50 species of deep-water corals, and hundreds of other invertebrates were recorded over 12 dives. And that's not including the ones they weren't able to classify.
“It’s pretty amazing that we haven’t been there yet, exploring really deep depths,†Andrea Quattrini, the co-lead for the expedition, told Quartz. "[Roughly] 95 percent of the ocean remains unexplored."
