There may be thousands of animals we already know about, but there are plenty of amazing ones still yet to be discovered.
See this vivid creature that looks like something straight out of an astronomy book?
It's a beautiful new species of freshwater crayfish called Cherax (Astaconephrops) pulcher.
Its discovery was recently made by renowned German scientist, Christian Lukhaupjust, in Hoa Creek in West Papua, Indonesia.
He published the animal's official classification report on Zookeys.
Crustaceans like the Cherax pulcher have been traded and sold since the early 2000s.
But their true origins remain unknown due to silent traders collectively abstaining from revealing their sources, probably because they were acquired and/or sold illegally.
But through immense research, Lukhaup finally traced the animal's place of origin to back to Hoa Creek in Indonesia...
Where he subsequently discovered that not only was this their home, it was home to an abundant variety of rare crayfish, including the beautiful Cherax pulcher.
