This Artist Created One Menacing Installation To Touch Us With This Truth Of Humanity

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

Concept artist Chiharu Shiota is not your typical artist - he creates substantive works that serve as symbolism for a number of different things, and always make the viewer think. His most recent installation at the 2015 Venice Art Biennale is no exception.

"The Key in the Hand" is certainly no ordinary work of art.
An elaborate entanglement of red wool and keys, the concept piece looks like something out of a Darren Aronofsky film.

Displayed in the biennale’s Japan pavilion, the installation covers practically the entire ceiling with its abundant network of intersecting strings, which includes a collection of more than 50,000 keys.

Each key holds the memories of the previous owner - a small but poignant representation of their varying daily lives.

“Keys are familiar and very valuable things that protect important people and spaces in our lives,” says Shiota.

Their dense entanglement represents the random but beautiful crossing of paths and sharing of memories that inevitably connects us all to each other.
Shiota's message, one could deduce, is that whether directly or indirectly, we all share something with each other.

“They also inspire us to open the door to unknown worlds… I would like to use keys provided by the general public that are imbued with various recollections and memories that have accumulated over a long period of daily use.”

And that something is a beautiful thing.
