This Artist Created One Menacing Installation To Touch Us With This Truth Of Humanity
Concept artist Chiharu Shiota is not your typical artist - he creates substantive works that serve as symbolism for a number of different things, and always make the viewer think. His most recent installation at the 2015 Venice Art Biennale is no exception.
Displayed in the biennale’s Japan pavilion, the installation covers practically the entire ceiling with its abundant network of intersecting strings, which includes a collection of more than 50,000 keys.
“Keys are familiar and very valuable things that protect important people and spaces in our lives,†says Shiota.
“They also inspire us to open the door to unknown worlds… I would like to use keys provided by the general public that are imbued with various recollections and memories that have accumulated over a long period of daily use.â€
