Maybe this awful family wasn't QUITE as awful as we all thought!

The operating explanation is that a Petunia and Lily had a bad relationship, and she was always very jealous of her sister, so...between that, and the fact that Vernon and Dudley just suck, Harry was in a bad spot.

But...was that really all that it was?

So remember how the Horcruxes pretty effectively ruined the tempers of all of those who spent too much time around them?

Who could forget the Dursleys? In the books they were just about the biggest A-holes every to grace the planet towards Harry Potter, and in the movies they were just as awful...only they provided some decent comic relief.

And remember how it was revealed in the end that Harry himself was actually a horcrux?

Here's a Reddit post from user ChristieIsBored, and it ties it all together pretty nicely.
They weren't THAT awful...they were just under the influence of a Horcrux!

It's not a theory without loopholes...if this were the reason for the Dursleys being so awful, why weren't Harry's friends at school mean? Or the Weasleys, who he spent extended periods of time with?

It's not perfect...but it's interesting to think about!
