by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

Good news. Spring is officially here, and summer isn't far behind. Before we know it, pools will be packed, flip flops will be a go-to choice, and the smell of barbecue will fill the evening air.

That means it's the perfect time to get to those DIY projects you've been mulling over all winter. If you're a bona fide DIY-er, that list may be extensive - make some room. For the casual home-brewer that knows a thing or two about a thing or two, but hates complicated directions, try this simple project on for size. Experienced or not, this birch-log coffee table is almost too easy to make.

First, the supplies.

You'll need plywood, birch logs, wood glue, and sanded grout.

Then cut out a base. Center it by attaching it to a slightly smaller plywood box.

A proportionate lip should be created around the outer edge.

Begin gluing the birch logs to the outside of the box along the baseboard.

Make sure you map out your spacing to avoid ending up with an awkward empty space too small for another log.

Once you've done that, attach a piece of plywood to cover the opening of the box.

Be sure to use wood thin enough for the logs to still stand higher than the box.

Cut a few logs into thin slices, depending on how much higher the outer logs rest above your box, then glue to to the top.

Try to line them up with the birch logs around the baseboard for a clean, symmetrical look.

Then, fill the spaces in between with grout.

Make sure to smooth it out with a grout float too.

And sand the top thoroughly until your birch slices are smooth and pristine.
Then, after letting everything set for at least a day, install your choice of legs to the bottom of the box.

If you want to make your table even more portable, install some wheels instead.

And there you have it. A rustic birch-log coffee table, sure to impress all your guests.
