If you're taking a boat ride near Traverse City in Michigan, you may want to take a peek below the bow and see what mysteries lie underneath the surface.Â
You might end up seeing a pretty shocking number of shipwrecks on the lake's floor!
All of these photos are courtesy of the crew at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City.
The Manitou Passage Underwater Preserve, where these photos were taken, is particularly ripe with shipwrecks. The 19th century was a rough time for ships going through this particular passage, and many didn't make it.
Some of the shipwrecks are unknown, but some have been identified. This is the wreck of the Rising Sun, which floundered in 1917.
This is the wreck of the James McBride, which floundered in 1848 after leaving Chicago for the Manitou Islands, near Sleeping Bear Dune.
