The bane of one's existence as a PhD candidate in almost any field, chemistry being no exception, is trying to celebrate your accomplishments with your friends and family outside of your program who probably have little to no idea what your work is about. How do you explain a complex chemistry thesis to someone who hasn't studied chemistry? If you want anything more than a few nods and "aaahh, how cool!"s, you might be out of luck.Â
Unless you take a page out of Veronica Berns's book!
Berns wanted to share the research she'd done on quasicrystals with people who didn't know a quasicrystal from their elbow, and by illustrating a comic on the subject, she was able to do just that!
But her family and friends were only the beginning. Her advisor saw that there was something truly incredible about the comic's ability to teach people valuable scientific information without requiring a science background.
So Berns ended up taking her comics to Kickstarter and was able to raise $14,000 to create a series of small books!
Berns is a chemist in Chicago now, but she is working on a blog as well, explaining the science that earned famous scientists Nobel Prizes. She continues to share her creativity and knowledge of science with the world, and we love that!
