This Artist Brilliantly Reuses Old Computer Circuit Boards to Create Insect Sculptures

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

In a world that's constantly moving from one piece of technology to the next, it's become our instinct to discard them immediately after they go out of date. And aside from it being discouragingly consumeristic and wasteful, it's also incredibly harmful to the environment, as electronic parts - which take years to start decomposing - fill more and more landfills around the world.

Artist, Julie Alice Chappell, isn't going with the crowd however. In an effort to raise environmental awareness, as well as simply express herself creatively, she takes the old, unused technologies we throw out, and turns them into something beautiful.

In her art series, "Computer Component Bugs," Chappell takes old circuit board parts, and makes them into colorful insects.
No two creations of hers are the same. Each possesses its own unique vibrancy.
Aside from the wings, which Chappell also makes herself, each piece of each insect was once a circuit board component.
The artist says that her inspiration for her unique and beautiful art came from when she first observed a computer's internal circuitry...
Stating that its infrastructure, design, and colors reminded her of nature.

“With all their tiny components, complex circuitry and bright metallic colours I cannot help but compare them to the detailed patterns we see when we look at nature up close..."

“I view the miniature circuit boards with the same curiosity and amazement as I view the natural world.“

And after seeing how perfectly integrated the two are in her work, it's certainly hard to disagree with her.
