What This Artist Intricately Cuts Into Steel Looks More Like Lace Than Actual Metal

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

Have you ever seen two things so seemingly polar opposite together that you couldn't help but be filled with amazement? Like a cat playing fetch, or a mechanic reading poetry, or perhaps a bodybuilder walking a poodle.

If you've ever seen things like these, they've probably taken you off guard quite a bit. Why? Because they're uncommon, rare, unexpected - they don't align with the historically based associations your mind has made.

Well, it's stereotype-defying contradictions like these that serve as the inspiration behind industrial artist Cal Lane's incredible work.

In her ongoing series of "Industrial Doilies," Lane cuts beautifully intricate designs into various metal objects.
She cuts them with so much detail, it's almost difficult to recognize they're made out of metal.
Using patterns and designs inspired by religious ceremonies, like weddings, christenings, and funerals...
Lane aims to make the rough and unsightly, beautiful and awe-inspiring.

“Like a Wrestler in a tutu, the absurdity of having opposing extremist stances is there for reaction and not rational understanding; the rational discussion arises in the search for how one thing defines the other by its proximity.”

And in the process of combining these two contradictory things...
Lane both conceals and exposes an object's original appearance...
While somehow also making it infinitely more beautiful.
