You know that semi-popular book-movie trilogy, "Lord of the Rings"? You know the place where all those short people lived, "Hobbiton"? Yeah, so apparently it's a very real place...like, one that you can actually go to.
No, but in all seriousness, as an ardent LOTR and Tolkien fan myself, I'm embarrassed to admit having not yet been. But it's officially #1 on my bucket list of travel destinations. Located in Matamata, New Zealand, on the intoxicatingly quaint Alexander Farm, Hobbiton is precisely what an LOTR buff would hope and wish of it, and then some.

On an aerial sweep of New Zealand's North Island, Peter Jackson's attention was captured.
Immediately upon seeing the Alexander Farm, he knew it was the quintessential location for Hobbiton.
Once filming for the trilogy had been complete though, the set was torn down.
Originally, the set was built in 1999, for the filming of the first LOTR movie.
Once filming for the trilogy had been complete though, the set was torn down.
Fortunately, production for a trilogy of the prequel, "The Hobbit" was approved, and the entire set was rebuilt in 2011.
Now, the site is a permanent tourist attraction, with exhaustive tours of the entire town.
And as one could assume, this made many, many people happy.
Visitors can even experience the iconic Hobbit pub, "The Green Dragon Inn"
Or just simply mosey around town, taking in its wondrous, nostalgic sights
One can only assume, that there are more than a few people that go there and back again.
