California-based artist, Merry Coor, has been glass-blowing since 2000, and has established a very successful business making glass bead jewelry. Necklaces, pendants, bracelets - you name it, Coor makes it.
But her business changed significantly when a young couple she was making a piece for requested that some of the cremated ashes of a lost, dear friend be incorporated into the bead, so that they could have something to remember them by.
Since then, Coor has taken a completely different conviction in her work, impassioned by the opportunity to help commemorate and honor the memory of lost loved ones.
These are Coor's beautiful creations, she simply calls, "ash beads"
Her creations are both mesmerizing and thought-provoking.
“My bead making now gave me a new purpose, and a way to honor others, both living and passed,†says Coor.
And Coor is both honored and humbled to be able take part in something so deeply personal, and sentimental to so many.
“It was 80 degrees in my studio that day, but I had the chills the entire time I was making the beads.â€
Indeed, the thought of making such richly meaningful works of art is arresting.
And it's certainly up there with on the list of "most unique and fascinating occupations."
