This Modern Parenting Issue Is One You Might Overlook, but It's Getting Some Attention

by N/A, 10 years ago | 1 min read

With the growing number of single and two-father homes in America, the need for all public bathrooms to have changing tables in them is getting pretty high. People have been speaking out about this for quite some time and the issue is becoming more and more relevant in our society.

Male bathrooms without changing tables makes it difficult for men to care for their children in public and somewhat reinforces a stereotype that only women hold the main responsibility as caregivers for their kids.

Recently new father and actor, Ashton Kutcher, spoke out about this issue.

Kutcher told A+ "I would like my daughter to experience a world where gender doesn't dictate one's responsibility or limit one's opportunity...Having changing tables in men's rooms is just a tiny step in the process of rectifying legacy gender discrimination. Men who are aware of this bias want to participate equally in the child care process and our society should support that. It's time to get our hands dirty."

There are a number of people working to solve this problem, Ricardo Lara, a state senator from California, is working on the Potty Parity for Parents Act. The act aims to provide equal access to baby-changing stations in public places.

Change.org also has a petition you can sign to help get companies like Target and Costco to "provide universally accessible changing tables in their stores."
