28 Photos That Show the Awesome Beginnings of Our Space Program

The San Diego Air and Space Museum has more than a million aviation and space related photos in their collection, and they've made some of them available online.

The pictures document some of the most important moments in aviation technology in history.
They also include the "Atlas Negative Collection" which has tens of thousands of photos from the origins of the American Space Program.
In the '50s and '60s Project Atlas was a project to develop one of the first ever intercontinental ballistic missiles.
The IBM could have been used to carry all sorts of things toward space, including a nuclear missile. It became top national priority in 1955.
Much of the progress made during Project Atlas was then used to design the rocket that brought three people to the moon.
