Out in the town of Weesp in The Netherlands lies a gated community known as Hogeweyk with a wonderful purpose: Making people with dementia feel comfortable.
The village has doctors and nurses, along with other staff members, working 24 hours per day to provide the patients with care.
There's different types of "lifestyles" available (seven, to be exact) so that every patient can feel comfortable and like they're living in a culture they are a part of.
Hogeweyk even has its own supermarket, so shopping can be done without ever leaving the gated community.
The community is designed for people with severe dementia/Alzheimer's, and only patients who qualify as severe are admitted.
The creation of this community was a multi-million dollar project.
One of the special parts of this community is that when patients begin to talk about memories that might be a bit off from reality, doctors and nurses don't correct them. They allow them to construct their own new, peaceful reality.
The devoted staff and the stunning architecture, as well as all of the little extra details, make this community a truly special one.
