Traveling can be incredibly expensive, but it doesn't have to be. Use these travel tips to make you into a much savvier traveler with a much fatter wallet!
1. Don't hesitate to make a direct, last-minute call.
If you call last-minute, there's a chance that the hotel is experiencing slow business and is desperate for a customer, and might let you grab a crazy discounted rate.
2. Pack light.
Don't let the airlines get one over on you with extra baggage fees!
3. Identify the super touristy spots, and stay the hell away.
By eating where the locals eat, you'll find cheaper, better food with less obnoxious Americans.
4. Book hotels for Sunday nights!
Sunday nights are an oft-looked over option for travelers. Business travelers book week nights, most vacation travelers book weekend nights, so Sunday provides some cheaper rates.
5. Look into nearby college/unversity campuses.
When school's not in session, sometimes these places will rent out empty dorms, and for pretty decent prices!
6. Support local alcohol!
Local options will almost always be cheaper, plus you'll get to drink the way the locals do...always fun!
7. Make breakfast/lunch your "big meal."
Dinner options are always expensive, so instead of eating in/on the cheap for breakfast/lunch, splurge on these meals for cheaper rates.
8. Give off-season traveling a try.
Sure, the weather might be a little colder, but if you can handle that, you'll find a LOT more vacancies and much better prices.
9. Embrace public transit
Cabs/taxis will hit your wallet in a very real way if you rely too much on them. Plus you'll learn how to get around this way.
10. Learn how to haggle your ass off
A lot of locals will assume you're a spineless tourist because, well, a lot of tourists ARE spineless. Haggling will prove you are a little more savvy than expected, and could get you a serious bargain.
11. Keep it flexible.
Don't plan things too far ahead—you never know when a super fun, super cheap opportunity is going to present itself!
12. Walk it out
Walking saves you tons of money, PLUS you get to see the sights!
13. Give hostels a chance!
Hostels have come a very long way from that infamous movie years back. These days they're pretty chic and very affordable, and can be a great way to meet fellow travelers.
14. Make your flight day as random as possible.
Flying on midnight on a Wednesday is probably going to be a LOT cheaper than flying anywhere on 6 p.m. on a Friday.
15. Only bring cash out with you.
Not only will you be in a better position if you get pick-pocketed, depending on where you are, but this will make sure you have a spending maximum for each day you're there.
16. Utilize the local markets and don't be afraid to cook/whip up a picnic!
Eating out every night will get EXPENSIVE, plus this is a great way to find the freshest local food in the area!
