Swimming in this lake would be a mistake that could cost you your life.
Lake Karachay can be found in the Urul mountains of Russia. It is so severely polluted with nuclear waste that being near it for an hour could kill you.
The Mayak Production Association nuclear facility is nearby and was the site of many accidents.
It order to control the amount of radiation in the area, the nuclear waste was being pumped into huge vats which one day exploded. This spread radioactive matter over 9,000 miles and ruined the food supply of 300,000 people.
The waste was thrown into the lake further polluting the area. Then a drought occurred, which spread toxic dust particles all around the surrounding area, leaving it uninhabitable.
