You might want to get a healthy start to the new year, but is a juice cleanse the right way to do that? Find out here.
1. There is no evidence that suggests that doing a juice cleanse purifies your body. "There's very little evidence that it does anything for your body," sauy John Buse, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Endocrinology at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
2. It's your liver and kidneys job to rid your body of impurities, but a juice cleanse doesn't speed up that process.
3. If you're already pretty healthy, a cleanse won't hurt you, however, it's suggested that you not try a cleanse if you've suffered from disordered eating at some point in your life.
4. Cleanses with lots of fruit juice increase your sugar intake a lot, but don't do much else. A sugar crash is inevitable.
5. Vegetable juice cleanses leave out necessary carbs. Lack of carbs will kill your energy levels and can cause dizziness.
6. Juicing also doesn't allow you to intake fiber and necessary nutrients like sodium.
7. They might make you lose weight, but you'll also be losing muscle mass.
8. And you'll probably gain all the weight back unless you completely change your lifestyle.
9. Juice cleanses that are considered healthier (ie minimal loss of nutrients) contain fruits, veggies, nuts and more.
10. Trying a cleanse isn't going to hurt you if you're already healthy, but it's not a quick fix.
