2014 wasn't a great year for planes. Two planes completely lost contact while another was shot out of the sky. While the wreckage of one of the missing planes has been found, another remains a mystery.
That's not the only mysterious missing plane however. Here are a few other planes that vanished, and no one knows why.
1. The Star Tiger, 1948
The Star Tiger disappeared during a flight to Bermuda and was the first plane to become lost in the rumored "Bermuda Triangle."
2. Star Ariel, 1948
In the same year as the Star Tiger, another plane vanished near the Bermuda islands. Conspiracy theorists believe the two missing planes were connected in some way.
3. Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 2501, 1950
Flight 250 vanished somewhere in the area near Lake Michigan and 65 years later, no wreckage has ever been found.
4. Pan Am Flight 7, 1957
Pan Am Fight 7 was planning to travel around the world, leaving from San Fransisco and making several stops before landing in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the plane never made it to the first stop in Hawaii. One of the largest searches ever did end up finding the wreckage in the ocean, but a cause of the crash remains unknown.
5. Boeing 707-323C, 1979
This cargo plane disappeared while on its way to Brazil with more than 150 paintings by Japanese artist Manabu Mabe on board. The wreckage of the plane, the bodies of the crew or the paintings were never found.
6. Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, 2014
In March of 2014, MH370 went missing on its way to Beijing. No trace of the plane has been found to date.
