Before we had the internet, it took a bit longer to find the answer to that burning question you had. You couldn't just pull up Google and find hundreds of pages filled with answers, you had to go to the library and search through books and encyclopedias on the subject. When those resources were exhausted, people would often go to the person behind the library desk to get the answer; the librarian.
Recently, the New York Public Library found a box of questions people had asked their librarians, and shared them with the world.
