Zeus was abandoned at 6 months by his original family, because they didn’t want a “defective dog,” but this wasn’t the end for Zeus. It was only the beginning...
When he was only a few months old, his first family noticed that he was developing a strange lump on his body, which eventually led to him becoming paralyzed after they refused to take him to receive medical help.
After he became too sick to handle, they decided to drop him off at a kill shelter in Oklahoma, but luckily Zeus’s life didn’t end there.
St. Francis Community Animals Rescue & Education (CARE) of Murphysboro, Illinois was able to rescue him just in time. They knew that if he stayed at this kill shelter, he’d never have a chance of becoming part of a family that truly cared for him.
Lynda Keuther became his foster mother, who explained that his paralyzation was likely due to a virus.
Zeus was given both steroids and antibiotics, and began physical therapy to strengthen his muscles again.
Luckily for Zeus, his foster mother was a physical therapist, so she knew that Zeus’s rehabilitation could also benefit from pool workouts. First, she and a friend had to manually move Zeus’s legs before he slowly began to gain some mobility in his limbs.
Out of the water, Zeus slowly learned how to crawl and scoot about the floor.
And as Zeus gained more strength in his limbs, his foster mother sought out the support of Facebook friends to purchase him a wheelchair. The donation goal was met in only three days!
Zeus had some setbacks, but he never once gave up. And because of it, he now walks without the help of a wheelchair.
See his amazing journey in the video below:
Although Zeus still needs steroids and physical therapy, he is living a life that no one ever expected to see and it is truly encouraging for all to witness. It's incredible to see what can happen when second chances are given.
