For the kids who spent their childhoods researching Michelangelo's lost works and plotting their escape to go live in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, these facts are for you.
Fans of The Mixed Up Files Of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, enjoy!
1. There was an absurd amount of controversy regarding the author's brief reference to the confusion between the words "heroine" and "heroin."
2. E.L. Konigsburg wrote and illustrated the book and her children posed for the illustrations.
3. The Met doesn't actually have any statues by Michelangelo.
4. The book was turned into a movie...but it wasn't nearly good enough.
5. The inspiration for this book was three fold. A NY Times article...
Konigsburg read an article about how the Met had bought a sculpture for an incredible bargain that might've belonged to one of the Masters.
6. A picnic that the author went on...
When picnicing with her children, she noticed they complained about even the smallest pieces of inconvenience in the picnic. She realized if they ever ran away it would need to be to a very posh place.
7. And an actual trip to the Met where the author spied something a little mysterious.
She saw a piece of popcorn within a roped off area, and thought to herself, what if someone snuck in after hours and snacked on popcorn here?
8. The bargain sculpture from the Met was eventually determined to be a cast of a sculpture by Verrochio--The Lady with the Primroses--possibly made by Da Vinci.
