Unfortunately, not all toys are fun and games. These 10 toys have proved that they can be very dangerous a lot of the time.
1. Monster Science Colossal Water Balls.
These balls expanded to 400 times their original size once placed in water, which could be really cool in a pool. Unfortunately, many kids mistook the fun colored balls for candy, and the balls expanded after being swallowed.
2. Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper
The Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper was one of the very first toys to include a fireable missile with it. A 4-year-old boy once shot the toy missile into his mouth, and eventually choked to death on it. Since then, any toy with parts smaller than a baseball was required to have a choking hazard warning on the box.
3. CSI: Fingerprint Examination Kit
When this toy was released in 2007, it allowed kids to dust for fingerprints, which sounds like fun! Unfortunately, the dust used to find these fingerprints were full of asbestos. The dust was apparently up to 7 percent tremolite, one of the most dangerous forms of asbestos. The toy wasn't pulled from the shelf until the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization filed a lawsuit to stop sales of the kit.
4. Snacktime Cabbage Patch Kid
The Snacktime Cabbage Patch Kid "ate" pieces of plastic food by using a motor in its mouth. However, the doll didn't eat just the plastic pieces of food that came with it, and on multiple occasions, it would try to eat fingers and hair of their human owners. Mattel issued a voluntary recall not long after.
5. Moon Shoes
Moon shoes were basically tiny trampolines that you wore on your feet, which sounds both awesome, and incredibly dangerous. It became clear that it was really easy to land from a jump poorly and end up with a broken ankle, or even worse.
6. Aqua Leisure Baby Boats
These boats look safe and sturdy to keep your baby floating. Unfortunately, they teared very easily, and could deflate with a baby in it. Luckily, no babies ever drowned because of the products.
7. Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab
In retrospect, it seems completely obvious that this kit wasn't all that safe. The kit came with four samples of Uranium ore (the same material nuclear weapons are made from) and an order form in case you needed to get more.
8. Slip 'N Slide
More than 30 million Slip 'N Slides have been sold since it first came out more than 50 years ago. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission started issuing warnings about Slip 'N Slides. Several teens and adults were injured using the toy, including neck injuries and paralyzation. The toy was pulled from the market for a bit, and returned in 2000, emphasizing a warning that it was meant only for ages 5 to 12.
9. Lawn Darts
Lawn Darts were really meant for adults, but that doesn't mean it was just adults playing with them. Some estimates say the force of a thrown lawn dart is 23,000 pound of pressure per inch (in other words, a lawn dart thrown at you could pierce the skull.) Hundreds of injuries and three deaths were credited to the game, and they were banned by the government in 1988.
10. The Easy Bake Oven
The Easy Bake Oven has been through quite a few redesigns since it was first introduced, but the model introduced in 2007 had a deadly design flaw which allowed the oven to trap and burn the fingers of kids using it.
