While some of these women were known as gun molls, which were basically gangster groupies, most of them were dangerous criminals in their own right and most of them paid the consequences.
1. Virginia Hill
Virginia is best known as the girlfriend of Brooklyn crime boss Bugsy Siegel. She was also called The Flamingo, which Siegel named his Las Vegas hotel.
2. The Pretty Pants Bandit
Born Marie Baker, Pretty Pants committed multiple shop robberies in 1933 with her crew of Pants Bandits. They earned their nickname after demanding that shopkeepers take off their pants. She was caught while checking her makeup in a mirror during a heist
3. Bonnie Parker
Bonnie is one half of the famed American crime duo, Bonnie and Clyde. She met Clyde Barrow in 1930 and they went on to commit bank robberies through 1934 until a shootout ended her life at age 23.
4. Evelyn "Billie" Frenchette
Frenchette is known for being John Dillinger's girlfriend. She met him after her first husband was arrested for committing a bank robbery. She travelled with him on crime sprees across the country, but was later arrested for harboring a fugitive.
5. Helen Gillis
At 16, Helen married "Baby Face Nelson,"a 1930's bank robber and murderer. She was regarded as more of an accomplice than a gangster. She was present at the "Battle of Barrington," a car chase that resulted in the death of her husband.
6. Ma Barker
Arizona "Ma" Barker married age 19 and had four sons. The Barker's were a crime family that committed highway robberies. One of her sons committed suicide to avoid being arrested and the other three were arrested. She was found in a hiding out in Florida.
7. Pearl Elliot
Pearl was a madam who owned a brothel in Indiana. The brothel served as a hideout for Harry Pierpont, a mentor to Dillinger. Despite being illegal, her brothel was protected by the police. She later worked as treasurer for Dillinger before dying at 47.
8. Stephanie St. Clair
Also called "Queenie," Stephanie St. Clair ruled Harlem. She made it her mission to protect her neighborhood by testifying against corrupt cops. She also ran a famous extortion gang called The Forty Thieves, the first organized street gang in New York.
9. Arlyne Brickman
Brickman worked for mob as a drug dealer, numbers runner and loan shark. After being threatened by another member of the mob, she decided to become an informant. She published a book called "Mob Girl: a Woman's Life in the Underworld."
