1. Laskarina Bouboulina, Greece
Laskarina was a Greek naval commander who fought in the Greek war of independence against the Ottomans. Using money from two previous marriages, she built one of the largest ships ever. She attacked several islands and led a force of 8 ships.
2. Margarita Neri, Mexico
Margarita acted as a commander during the Mexican Revolution and led a force of 1000. When the governor of Guerrero heard of her impending arrival, he hid in a crate and left town.
3. Corazon Aquino, The Philippines
After her husband's assassination, Corazon ran for office and "lost" to dictator Ferdinand Marcos. She encouraged peaceful protests. He asked military personnel to shoot them down. They refused and he fled the country. She became president soon after.
4. Emilia Plater, Poland
After being told that she couldn't join the Polish revolution against the Warsaw Insurrection, she cut her hair and made her own uniform in order to join. She assembled a force of 500 Lithuanian fighters. She became known as The Countess of the Revolution
5. Kittur Rani Chennamma, India
Rani, an Indian queen who battled the British East India Company, wanted to adopt a son in order to carry on the royal line and remain ruler. A battle began when she wasn't allow to do this. Eventually she was sabotaged and taken prisoner.
6. Leymah Gbowee, Liberia
Leymah started a peaceful movement to bring an end to the civil war in Liberia which took over 250,000 lives. She trained as a trauma counselor for young girls who had experienced the war and started the Women of Liberia Mass Action For Peace Movement.
7. Toypurina
Toypurina was a Native American medicine woman who was exposed to war at a young age. She strongly opposed Spanish colonization of her lands. She was sent into exile after trying and failing to kill Spanish priests using magic.
8. Nanny Of The Maroons, Jamaica
Nanny led a group of slaves against British oppressors. She also led a group from Ghana into Jamaica, so they could gain freedom. She led a raid of plantations to free even more slaves and became known as a hero in the anti-slavery movement.
9. Queen Mavia of Arabia
Mavia was a warrior queen who attacked Rome after a disagreement with Roman Emperor Valens. She led raids and massacres in Egypt and Palestine. Fearing further conflict, Valens decided to agree on a peace deal according to Mavia's terms.
10. Yaa Asantewaa, Ghana
Yaa was Queen Mother of the Edweso region (Ghana). Her tribe, the Asante, were being unfairly taxed by the British. She gave a famed speech in resistance which started a war for independence. She assembled an army of 4,000, but was captured and sent into
