Women have always been associated with witchcraft. It is believed that women are more likely to commit sins than men.

Alice Lake confessed to being pregnant out of wedlock and "convening with the devil through her sin" because of immense guilt. She was later hanged.

Blended fabrics, adultery and touching pig carcasses were all grounds for being burned at the stake.
