Anyone can knit with yarn, but it takes someone truly special to knit with glass. Seattle-based artist Carol Milne created the knitting technique in 2006, which also involves lost-wax casting, mold-making, and kiln-casting. This is how it's done:
The first step is creating a model out of hot wax, and then encasing it in a mold that can withstand high temperatures.
Then, the wax is melted with hot steam. Only the hollow mold remains.
Room temperature glass is used to fill the empty mold, and it's again heated to about 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit.
But the sculpture isn't done yet. It has to be cooled down over the course of several weeks.
After that, Milne carefully chips away the mold to reveal the final piece.
It's a ton of work, but the final product is absolutely stunning.
