A new prototype of a cast uses low intensity ultrasound pulses (LIPUS) to help bones heal faster.
The sound waves increase the calcium in cartilage and bone cells needed to heal bones.
A daily 20-minute session at a medical clinic is required to reduce the healing process by up to 38% and the heal rate by up to 80%.
The probes need to be directly touching the skin. This can be hard with ordinary casts, so casts like this one are being designed.
It’s a pretty sleek design, and will let the affected area breathe!
But there's a catch: LIPUS hasn't been widely adopted because the benefits have varied across trials. Sometimes, the benefits aren't substantial enough to pursue the new prototype.
