Shark week is fun, but let’s be honest—sea turtles are the most badass creatures in the sea, by far. And we have the proof right here!

1. The oldest known sea turtle fossils date back 150 million years. To compare, dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago.

3. Female sea turtles lay their eggs in the same nesting grounds where they were hatched.

5. Sea turtles are massive. They can grow to be about 2,000 pounds.

7. Not all 150 eggs hatch, though, and not all baby turtles become adults. About one in every 1,000 hatchlings will make it to adulthood.

9. Sea turtles don't cry. They do have glands in their eyes that help expel excess salt, but it only LOOKS like they're crying.

10. Whether a sea turtle is a male or female depends on its temperature during incubation.

Warmer temperature tend to produce female turtles, while cooler temperatures produce male turtles.
