Book your flight (and a puppy playdate) today.

Between the endless beaches, stunning sunsets and copious other natural wonders, Hawaii is the perfect vacation destination for anyone in need of some serious R&R. Of course, as with any getaway, the downside is that you have to leave your dog at home, which prompts feelings of sadness when you’re supposed to be having the time of your life.

So in an effort to make vacation furry and fun again, the Kauai Humane Society devised an adorable plan that lets you take a shelter dog on a field trip for the day as you explore the beautiful island.

The field trips are a great chance for the dogs to get some exercise outside the shelter while becoming adjusted to an outdoor lifestyle. Meanwhile, you get to explore the beautiful beaches or go on a breathtaking hike together.

After you’re matched with a pup at the shelter, they’re dressed in a flashy ‘adopt me’ vest, so if anyone on the island falls in love at first sight, they can start the adoption process—it’s a win-win-win for you, the shelter and the dogs!

And if you happen to fall in love with your puppy pal while you’re vacationing together, the humane society will help you with the adoption process and travel arrangements to get your new best friend home with you safely — the shelter says this actually happens more than you think, with about four dogs adopted through the field trip program each month.

So start planning that overdue vacation to Kauai—and maybe buy a few dog toys before your flight!
