West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, which opened in 1818 was one of the most famous hospitals in England, but has been closed since 1995. There were four hospitals in the asylum: Stanley Royd Hospital, South Yorkshire Hospital, High Royds Hospital and Storthes Hall. These photos are of just a few of the hospital's patients and sheds light on diagnostics and treatments in the Victorian Era.Â

Many believe this may have been catatonia. It was described as "a permanent state of mind-weakness followed by acute psychosis."
