We know it might make these movies a whole lot more terrifying, but the fact of the matter is, all of these films were based on some sort of real life event. Some were inspired a little more closely than others.
The Blob
Incredibly enough, The Blob WAS based off a real phenomenon in NYC where multiple NYPD officers kept coming into this very strange gooey substance.
2. Open Water
Probably the least surprising on this list, this film was based on an actual shark attack on two American tourists.
3. The Conjuring
Real-life investigators of paranormal activity reported a story very similar to this one with a family named the Parrons.
4. The Girl Next Door
Tragically, this was based off of a true story of a girl who was tortured and killed by the woman she was left with when her parents went away.
5. The Exorcist
The Washington Post ran an article about an exorcism that took place in real life in 1949.
6. Psycho
Though the name is changed, the main character Norman in this film was based on real life murderer Ed Gein.
7. The Amyityville Horror
The movie was based on the book that wrote about super strange paranormal events that were recorded by the Lutz family.
8. Child's Play
Child's Play was based on reports of evil happenings befalling one unlucky family whose child Eugene was given the doll by a servant scorned.
9. Nightmare on Elmstreet
This film was based on some newspaper articles that kept reporting multiple refugees who kept dying in their sleep.
