An age old question almost as pressing as the chicken and the egg.
Orange: It's your favorite un-rhymeable word.
But which was called "orange" first?
The fruit?
Or the color?
The earliest use of "orange" was in the 13th Century and described the fruit; in the 16th Century it was expanded to define the color as well.
This is according to the book Symbols and Their Hidden Meanings by T.A. Kenner. He writes that before orange the fruit was discovered, orange the color was called yellow-red or red-yellow.
Orange you glad that's cleared up?
